NATO Parliamentary Assembly
The NATO Parliamentary Assembly serves as the consultative interparliamentary organisation for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). It consists of delegates from the parliaments of the 32 NATO member countries as well as from associate and partner countries. Its current president is Marcos Perestrello from Portugal. Its current secretary general is Ruxandra Popa, who has been in this position since January 2020. History The idea to engage Alliance Parliamentarians in collective deliberations on the problems confronting the transatlantic partnership first emerged in the early 1950s and took shape with the creation of an annual conference of NATO parliamentarians in 1955. Tomáš Valášek
Tomáš Valášek (born 21 June 1972) is a Slovak diplomat and politician. From 2013 to 2017 he served as the ambassador of Slovakia to NATO. From 2020 he is a Member of the National Council. Tomáš Valášek studied journalism at the Comenius University but did not finish. Following a semester abroad in Antwerp, he moved to the US to study at the University of Georgia. Following his graduation in Journalism at the University of Georgia, Valášek went on to study International Affairs at the George Washington University. Following his studies, Valášek worked at the think tanks World Security Institute, Centre for European Reform and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. In 2013 he Valášek became the Slovak ambassador to NATO, a post he held until 2017. North Macedonia–NATO Relations
North Macedonia is a member state of the NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). In 1995, the country joined the Partnership for Peace. It then began taking part in various NATO missions, including the International Security Assistance Force and the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan. At the 2008 Bucharest summit, Greece vetoed the country's invitation to join; however, NATO member states agreed that the country would receive an invitation upon resolution of the Macedonia naming dispute. Following Prespa agreement, an agreement in June 2018 to rename the country, representatives of NATO member states signed a protocol on the accession of North Macedonia to NATO on 6 February 2019. Finland has been a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) since 4 April 2023. In the aftermath of World War II, following the formation of NATO in 1949 and throughout the Cold War, Finland maintained a position of neutrality, in what became known as Finlandization, in the face of its often complicated relations with the Soviet Union.
